News and impressions from BIG-NSE Workshop

Friday, 07. January 2011

Today, 15 BIG-NSE students of the 4th initial phase presented their PhD projects.

Prof. Reinhard Schomäcker

Florian Meier calculates molecular properties of metal complexes, e. g. Nickel in the group of Professor Martin Kaupp who came to TU Berlin in October 2010.

Fedaa Al Masri is an Erasmus student and came from Jordan. She is going to work on the synthesis of water-soluble phosphine ligands in the group of Professor Karola Rück-Braun. Her co-supervisor is Professor Reinhard Schomäcker

Pradip Dey studied chemistry in Calcutta. Now he has joined the group of Professor Rainer Haag at FU Berlin to work on the immobilization of enzymes.

Manar Arafeh comes from Jordan to the Junior Research group of Dr. Stephan Enthaler. Her PhD project deals with iron complexes as catalysts for amination reactions.

Heiner Schwarz joined the Junior Research group of Dr. Raimund Horn. He examines the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) detection of gas-phase radicals using laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIF).

Amandine Guiet studied chemistry in France, Germany and the US (Florida). In UniCat, she works on the synthesis of mesoporous transparent conductive oxides. These oxides will be used as support for enzyme immobilization. Her supervisors are Dr. Anna Fischer and Professor Matthias Driess.

Marius Horch is from Berlin. He studied biotechnology at TU Berlin. After two years at Robert Koch Institute he joined the group of Professor Peter Hildebrandt. He will do spectroscopic research on NAD+ reducing [NiFe]-hydrogenase.

Elisabeth Siebert studied physics at TU Berlin and at the University of Texas in Austin. Her PhD project dealing with combined spectroscopic studies on the oxygen tolerance of the MBH of Ralstonia eutropha is  supervised by Professor Peter Hildebrandt, too.

Jian Li holds a master's degree in food science and biotechnology. He joins the group of Professor Peter Neubauer and does research on recombinant production of valinomycin in Escheria coli

Rashed al Toma studied biotechnology in Ghent (Belgium), at HU Berlin and in Syria where he comes from. His PhD project in the group of Professor Roderich Süssmuth will deal with the expression, production and isolation of novel bioactive ribosomal peptides.

Xinrui Zhou studied chemical biology at different universities in China. Now she has joined the group of Professor Peter Neubauer. She works on thermophilic pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase.

Arno Bergmann is a physicist from Freiburg University. He went one year abroad to Gothenburg (Sweden). Now he is going to do research on in situ structure-reactivity studies at electrified catalytic interfaces in the group of Professor Peter Strasser.

Elham Baktasch is an inorganic chemist from Iran. She is going to perform her PhD on iron-oxo catalysed O-O bond formation and epoxidation reactions. Her supervisors are Dr. Kallol Ray and Professor Christian Limberg.

Florian Heims studied chemistry at HU Berlin. His PhD project is supervised by  Dr. Kallol Ray and Professor Christian Limberg, too. He works on the O-O bond cleavage in a methane monooxygenase model system.

Swantje Wiebalck studied chemistry at FU Berlin. She joined the group of Professor Carl Christoph Tzschucke. There she does research on immobilization of transition metal redox catalysts on electrode surfaces.
