We are very sad to announce that Professor Helmut Schubert passed away suddenly on the 14th of March 2012.
Professor Schubert was part of the UniCat core team. His passing is deeply mourned on both a personal and academic level. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. Our thoughts are also with his colleagues.
Born and raised in Duisburg, Helmut Schubert studied Crystallography at the RWTH Aachen and earned his PhD at the University of Stuttgart. He was post doc and group leader for materials processing at the Max-Planck Institute for metals research at Stuttgart. He joined the Technische Universität Berlin in 1995 and became Professor for Ceramic Materials.
Professor Schubert was part of the UniCat Cluster of Excellence from its beginnings in 2007 and was one of the mainstays of the engineering field. Just at the beginning of this year, he transferred to the Charlottenburg Campus with his work group and moved into new rooms in the BA Building. A book of condolences is available there at the entrance to the Ceramic Materials Research Unit.
His death comes as a great shock to us all. We have lost a valued friend and colleague and an excellent scientist.
On behalf of the UniCat Executive Board,
Prof. Matthias Driess and
Prof. Peter Hildebrandt
