Sara Bruun, Ann-Katrin Jungton (both HU Berlin) and Juliane Ratzka (TU Berlin) made it: They raised funds of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for three exchange stipends.
This exchange is part of the summer internship programme RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) of DAAD in cooporation with the German Research Foundation (DFG). About 350 candidates out of 1.200 applicants were awarded an internship. Three of them are coming to UniCat.
Sara Bruun, BIG-NSE-fellow and PhD student in the group of Prof. Peter Hegemann, is looking forward to Alexander Wolkow of University of Alberta in Canada. Saleem Butt from Imperial College London (UK) is coming to Ann-Katrin Jungton in the research group of Prof. Thomas Braun. Juliane Ratzka does research at TU Berlin in the group of Prof. Marion Ansorge-Schumacher in the field of enzyme technology. She raised the stipend for Jason Theobald from University of Maryland (USA).
In the middle of May the first interns will come to Berlin. They will stay at UniCat up to the end of August. The foreign undergraduate students will get to know life in Germany and first insights into research possiblilities at German universities. The German doctoral students acts as their mentors and the RISE interns will assist them.
The Chair of UniCat, Prof. Matthias Driess, is happy about the succesful proposal of the three female UniCat PhD students: „UniCat’s research topics are up to date. We are very attractive for young dedicated students also from the US, Canada and UK. They are an important target group for recruiting excellent young scientists for UniCat and its graduate school BIG-NSE.“
What is RISE?
RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 1.5 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English.
RISE internships were first offered in 2005 to applicants from the US and Canada. Following the first intake of around 100 students in 2005, the number of participants has increased steadily. Due to its great success, the program has been extended to the UK.
