15 June 2018
Two PhD students of BIG-NSE were awarded with the “Chinese government award for outstanding self financed students abroad” from the Chinese scholarship council. The awarding ceremony for Shuang Li and Yupeng Zhou, will take place at the Berlin Chinese Embassy on July 1st.
The award was established in 2003 by China Scholarship Council. The recipients worldwide are chosen each year for their outstanding accomplishments in any discipline. This award is especially established for students who do not receive financial support from Chinese government. Currently, 500 students are awarded yearly, from about half a million students leaving China to study abroad each year. The award includes a one-time $6000 cash award and a certificate.
Shuang Li started her PhD in October 2015 in the group of TU professor Arne Thomas. The topic of her PhD is "Porous carbon materials synthesized from salt-templating method for electrochemical catalyst". So far, she wrote eight papers during her PhD, four of them as first author. Her first-author papers were published in "Ang. Chem. Int. Ed." and "Advanced Materials". Beneath the “Chinese government award for outstanding self financed students abroad” Shuang Li gained an award for the Excellent Master 's Degree Thesis of Shanghai (in 2016), the Luomai Technology Leader Elite Scholarship from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (in 2017) and the CGCA Young Researchers Award of the Chinese-German Chemical Association (in 2018).
Yupeng Zhou started his PhD in September 2014 in the group of TU professor Matthias Driess. The topic of his PhD is "N-Heterocyclic Silylenes as Tools in Coordination Chemistry and Catalysis". During his PhD, Yupeng wrote seven papers, three of them as first author. His three first-author papers were published in "Angew. Chem. Int. Ed." and "Chem. Eur. J." Two of these papers were qualified as "hot papers", one of them even made it to the front cover of the journal. During his PhD at TU, Yupeng was awarded two further awards, the Silicon Youth Spring Prize at the 18thInternational Symposium on Silicon Chemistry (ISOS-18) & 6th Asian Silicon Symposium (ASiS-6) in 2017 and the CGCA Young Researchers Award of the Chinese-German Chemical Association in 2018. Yupeng successfully defended his PhD on 15 June 2018.
